Maya Angelou is on my mind this morning—I just learned about and now ordered a new book of hers—Letter to my Daughter—her first new book in 10 years.
The more time I spend with my mother, the more I have come to actively appreciate being able to do whatever I want to do, whenever I want to do it. At 92, most simple tasks are a real challenge for her, but rather than give up, she’s found alternate ways to accomplish them. And she’s pretty proud of her ingenuity.
As we head into the closing of one year and the dawning of a new one, I find myself thinking a lot about endings and beginnings. Eastern philosophers tend to view the end of something not as a door slammed shut, but rather more like a track switch. Our train may be diverted, at times rather joltingly, but the journey continues—perhaps not quite as we thought it would, but no less full of potential than before.

I logged onto my email this morning and was overwhelmed by all the spam that arrived in the night. So of course, I began the process of deleting.
After tomorrow’s reflection, you won’t be hearing from me until after the holiday. My mother is scheduled for eye surgery on Tuesday, so I’ll be staying with her for a few days to be sure her recuperation goes well.
