A New Son
The morning before they were to be wed, the subject came up—“What will you call me?” I asked the man who was about to become my daughter’s husband. Without blinking he responded, “If it’s okay with you, I’d like to call you, ‘Mom.’” My heart swelled—oh yes, it was way more than okay.
And so it is that I have a new son—the beautiful man who promised to love and cherish my daughter so long as they both shall live. Life doesn’t get much sweeter for a mom.
A mother’s happiness is like a beacon, lighting up the future but reflected also on the past in the guise of fond memories.” ~Honoré de Balzac
“Grown don’t mean nothing to a mother. A child is a child. They get bigger, older, but grown? What’s that suppose to mean? In my heart it don’t mean a thing.” -Toni Morrison, Beloved, 1987
“There is an instinct in a woman to love most her own child - and an instinct to make any child who needs her love, her own.”—Robert Brault
