Another God Wink
Some years ago a student presented me with a small book entitled, God Winks. The author defined God winks as those moments in our lives when what transpired felt far greater than mere coincidence.
So it was that I believe that I received a God wink this morning. As has been my habit these days, I hopped onto my treadmill and simultaneously switched on the tv. Despite my usual practice of watching the news as I go through my paces, I was not up for those ramblings today, so I flipped to a movie channel. The flick, previously unknown to me, was already in progress. “Cool Runnings” is loosely based on the true story of a Jamaican bobtail team that aspired to compete in the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Alberta. I tuned in at the point where it was imminently apparent to everyone but the coach and the four team members that the group was simply out of their league. The odds were stacked against them: Jamaica never saw snow, let alone ice. The players never experienced temperatures under 50 degrees, let alone sub-freezing temperatures. Nor did they even know how to walk on ice. Even so, they remained undaunted and entered the preliminaries which would determine whether they would or would not be allowed to compete in the games. Despite all the odds and all the ribbing and mean-spirited jabs, they qualified.
I did not get to watch the whole film, but some lines are yet ringing in my ears: “All he has to do is know what he wants and work hard for it. If he wants it bad enough, he’ll get it” and “Cool Runnings” means ‘Peace Be The Journey.’” and, I’m just trying to be the best I can be.”
I stepped off my treadmill and felt inspired and empowered. Whether it’s a playing a sport or learning music or achieving harp therapy certification or being the best we can be, it can all be ours if we believe in ourselves and are willing to go after it and make it happen.
What a great way to start the day!
