Making Music
“I’m coming to visit you tomorrow, Bubie, because I want to play your piano.” my three-year old grandson informed me on the phone yesterday. An old memory instantly flashed through my mind. I was his age or even a bit younger. My mother had taken me to visit a high school friend of hers. Upon our arrival, we were led into a large living room, where to my amazement and utter delight, a magnificent grand piano sat. Once I could find my voice, I mustered up the courage to ask my mother to ask her friend if I could—-for just a moment—touch the shiny black and white keys. How my little fingers ached to make them sing! My mother asked; her friend said no.
I know that it’s because of that incident, so, so many years ago, that I’ve always invited every child who has ever come to my home to play my Steinway grand. Everyone should be given an opportunity to make their own music

Oh Edie how this resonates with me. I have had many the argument with fellow musicians and family members when I allow a child to touch one of my instruments. My belief has always been that music is in ALL of us just waiting for a nudge. I am happy to say I have had many a young adult say thank you for that nudge and that so makes me Smile!
Have a Glorious Day.
