The Unexamined Life
Flipping through the channels last night, I came upon a show called, “What I Hate About Me.” The title stopped me in my tracks; the content left me speechless.
A young woman, the focus of the program, offered a list of things she hated about herself. Last night’s guest revealed two things she hated about herself: first, that she could not sew on a button and secondly, that she did not know how to apply eye make-up.
Silly me—from the title of the program, I imagined that guests’ reflections might involve such self-awarenesses as, “I have problems with forgiveness,” or “I don’t seem to make friends easily.”
Good thing Socrates isn’t around….
“The unexamined life is not worth living.” — Socrates
“Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves.” — Carl Jung
“We should every night call ourselves to an account; What infirmity have I mastered today? What passions opposed? What temptation resisted? What virtue acquired? Our vices will abort of themselves if they be brought every day to the shrift.” — Seneca
May your day be filled with self-discovery, wonder, and love.
Enjoy your day!
