Wellness
Yesterday I played at a facility new to me. Walking across the parking lot, I held a prayer in my heart, “May the music from my little harp do the greatest good.” The first patient I played for was asleep, his respirator toiling tirelessly to keep him alive. As I played, I took in his room—photos of happier days, he with a small child, likely his own; he, smiling, holding a lovely woman, probably his wife, in his arms; he in a pool; he at a party, surrounded by friends and perhaps family. The thirty-something year old man in the bed before me, breathing now because a machine allows him to, had led a rich, happy life not all that long ago. Yet another reminder to me that but for the grace of God go I.
