How Sweet the Sound
A staff member relayed a patient’s request for harp music. I approached the room and played at his door as his curtain was drawn and I could not see him. In a few moments, I slowly entered the room playing, telling the patient I had been told he would appreciate some music and I’d be happy to play for him. I went around the curtain to find the patient alert and oriented, resting comfortably, but he immediately began to cry as soon as I came into view. With tears streaming down his face, he got out his phone and began videotaping me as I played. He continued to cry for quite a few minutes, not trying to stop, allowing the tears to flow. I played several soft, slow pieces for him as he let go of his emotions, eventually moving to lighter pieces such as “Heart and Soul.” Upon hearing the song and recognizing the music, his crying eventually stopped with a big sigh, and he settled back on his pillow, smiling a bit at me. I wished him well as I left. His response was, “Thank you for the music. I could feel the healing as you played. It’s magical. Thank you so much.”
