Back by popular demand—Summer 2011 Harp Therapy Certification Intensive!
This highly intensive, comprehensive program is open only to intermediate level harpists and harpers. Complete Modules I, II, and III, receive one-on-one mentoring from mastery level graduates, complete a third of your internship in eight weeks of intensive study and practice. All classroom modules offered through Bucks County Community College and will take place off-campus, in the Bedside Harp Great Room at 6318 Neshaminy Valley Drive, Bensalem, PA. Students may elect to play all or some of their internships at any one of our host hospitals which to date includes Robert Wood Johnson University Hospitals in Hamilton, and Rahway and The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, and Saint Clare’s Hospital in Denville, New Jersey, Abington Memorial Hospital in Abington, and Cancer Treatment Centers of America at Eastern Regional Medical Center in Philadelphia PA. We have arranged for reasonable housing for those students wishing to stay in the area for the eight week period.
Eight Weeks of Study and Closely Mentored Internship:
Module I: Tuesday through Friday, June 21- 24
Module II: Tuesday through Friday, July 5-8
Module III: Monday through Friday, July 25-29
Important Application and Registration Deadlines
by May 1, 2011 the following must be completed:
all application materials, including your tape or cd (in which you play ten tunes simply) submitted to Bedside Harp;
registration and full payment for three modules with Bucks County Community College;
full payment for Module V (internship module) and materials fee paid directly to Bedside Harp;
processing must at least be started at the host hospital at which you wish to play all or some of your hours. Processing involves a two-step tuberculosis test, proof of inoculations or vaccination titre, criminal background check, and a day-long orientation conducted by the hospital. Additionally, some of our hospitals also require a complete physical examination, chest x-ray, and a drug urine test.
Acceptance process involves an interview (may be conducted on the telephone) and a formal acceptance letter as well as introductory materials
Schedule is as follows:
June 21-24: Module I presentation
June 25-July 4: Play a minimum of 10 hours in common areas. Work on music development, readings, writings, etc. Receive at least one contact hour
July 5-8: Module II presentation
July 9-24: Play a minimum of 10 hours in common areas and if ready, in the ER as well. Work on music development, readings, writings, etc. Receive at least two contact hours.
July 25-29: Module III presentation.
July 30-August 14: Play a minimum of 20 hours in patient areas. Continue to work on music and repertoire development, receive at least two contact hours, submit required module and reading reflections, plan practicum project.
Module IV may be taken either in September 2011 or 2012. Dates TBA (this module may be offered online as well).
Students may take the required 12-week online course, “Conversations on Ethics for Musicians in Healthcare,” from September through December 2011.
Students begin their internships immediately following the presentation of Module I, playing first in common areas in our host hospitals or a facility of your choice and our approval, and then, after Module III, if ready, in patient rooms. We encourage you to play at least some of your internship at one of our host hospitals, all of which we see as our incubators. At these hospitals open to and familiar with harp therapy, students receive the benefit of hands-on supervision, mentorship, support and training by our mastery level graduates. If 80% of the internship is completed at any one of our host hospitals, graduates will receive the designation of Hospital-Certified. If 50% of the internship is completed at any one of our host hospitals, graduates receive the designation of Hospital-Intensive. Hospital-Certified and Hospital-Intensive designations are co-conferred by the host hospital and Bedside Harp. If less than 50% of the internship is completed at our host hospitals, students will graduate with the certification of Certified Harp Therapist or Certified Master of Harp Therapy conferred by Bedside Harp. Additionally, students receive certificates of completion for each successfully completed classroom module from Bucks County Community College.
