Instructional folk harp for adults

We do not believe in ourselves until someone reveals that deep inside us something is valuable, worth listening to, worthy of our trust, sacred to our touch.  Once we believe in ourselves we can risk curiosity, wonder, spontaneous delight or any experience that reveals the human spirit.  Edwin M. Campbell and Peter A. McMahon, Please Touch

If you want to make beautiful music on a beautiful instrument, whether or not you have had previous musical training, you’ve come to the right place.

Our instructional folk harp lessons are offered online and hybrid and may be taken in one-on-one private sessions or in a small group, depending on availability of others playing at a similar level.

When taken online, students receive a recording of each session so that they are able to play through each lesson as many times as they wish.  Lessons focus on developing good harp technique, playing tunes both by ear and by using simple notation, as well as improvising.  All classes use our two-volume text, Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About the Harp and Music.

Once a student is able to play ten tunes–even simply– they are eligible to apply to our harp therapy certification program.

Instructional intensive program

The Highly Individualized Instructional Intensive

Through the years people have requested Edie to teach them to play the harp as she does in our certification program—showing students how to make beautiful music by improvising freely and playing by ear. We are thrilled to announce that, on a very limited basis, Edie is offering lessons in the form of a 15-day instructional intensive exclusively online. Here is what you’ll receive:

  • 11 private lessons in person or virtually with Edie Elkan, Founding Director of Bedside Harp, will teach you how to play your instrument the Bedside Harp way. Whether a beginner or a more seasoned player, with a music background or not, you’ll learn how to make beautiful music by improvising, playing by ear, and playing from a fake book. What’s more, you’ll understand why something sounds beautiful or not so much and most importantly, how to turn a musical grimace into a smile.
  • Participate in one round of our Bedside Harp harp circle sessions over the course of the days where you can play along with the group or just observe.
  • All materials, music, and books, including a personalized syllabus, recordings of each virtual session and our highly-regarded Edie Elkan’s Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About the Harp and Music textbook which includes music theory, how to navigate tunes, playing by chord, left hand patterns, basic harp technique, melodic and harmonic “secrets” and much more, in addition to well over 100 tunes appropriate for bedside and fireside harp playings
