Taking Care of His Family

As I pushed the button for the elevator to go to the 3rd floor, a nurse came running and said, “Please don’t leave yet.  Could you please go into this room?  The man in there is very sick and his family is very worried.”  She gave me the room number so I went to the room and the man appeared to be unresponsive and connected to a lot of equipment.  As I played, he began to rock back and forth and open his eyes.  One of the visitors told me he had not opened his eyes all afternoon.  One family member started to cry.  They said that was the first response they’ve gotten from him all day.  As long as he was nodding, I kept playing.  When I looked at my watch, I realized that I was there for a while but it was worth every minute knowing how much this patient reaction meant to the family.
