Striking A Notable Difference In Healthcare Since 2002

An Impromptu Songfest

The patient, an alert and oriented female, was sitting in the hall in a wheelchair watching all the activity.  She smiled as I came down the hall.  I paused in front of her, playing some Irish tunes, and she named them each as she recognized them.  When I began to play “You Are My Sunshine,” two staff members approached, both grinning widely, and they stood on either side of the patient with their arms around her, and they all sang along with the music.  The patient smiled broadly and reached out to the staff members.  She began singing as we went through a second round of the song. They finished with a big flourish, patting the patient on the arm, and telling her how much they enjoyed singing with her.  They continued on their way down the hall as I played a few more tunes for the patient.
