This patient called me to his side of the room and asked if I could play “Little Drummer Boy” for him. I played it several times, and the patient hummed along at first. Suddenly he teared up a bit and bowed his head, listening to the music quietly. When I finished that song, he thanked me and explained that I had played for him a number of times over the past few years when he was hospitalized, and that he always appreciated the music and the visit. He said, “I’m so glad to have the opportunity to thank you for all you’ve done for me.”
