Reality
Some years ago an 89 year old relative told me that even though he was walking slower and his hair had turned silver, deep down inside, he still felt like the 20-something year old he once had been. That brief conversation reminds me to look into the eyes of the patient before me and see beyond the iv bags, the monitors, the tubes, and instead, consider the more important question—what tune can I play to remind this very ill man who he really is?

Yes, that is so true ...my 87 year old mother also says that she feels like 18 yrs. inside. I find that I have to constantly remind myself to get past the visible differences (age, race, disability, language, illness with all its tubes and monitors, etc.)and focus on the person within in order to find common ground and “see” them.
